The 2008 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament is just around the corner. Detroit sports fans will once again be at the center of the festivities as Ford Field will be a host arena for the much anticipated annual tournament. On Friday, March 28th and Sunday, March 30th, four Sweet Sixteen teams will meet at the Midwest Regional in Detroit to determine who goes on to the Final Four.
College basketball takes center stage each March with all of its inherent drama as 65 teams play in a single-elimination or “sudden death” tournament to see who the best team is in the country. Some smaller, Division 1 conferences get just one representative school into the NCAA basketball tournament, and the “powerhouse” conferences may have as many as 6 or 7 teams qualify and attain that coveted tournament selection.
March Madness gets its name from the millions of devoted fans who watch, cheer, place bets, and hold their breath as their team fights to move on to the next round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. College basketball fans will argue that there is no higher high than when your team wins the game at the buzzer. Watching the emotion on the players’ faces is intense. There also are no second chances for the teams that can’t pull off that last second shot to keep moving on. It’s live or die, and college basketball fans are passionate when March arrives on the calendar.
