Held on the 3rd Saturday of August each year, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world's largest one-day celebration of car culture. Really . . . it's the largest classic car cruise in the world!
The event in Oakland County, Michigan attracts more than 1.7 million visitors and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles. Although the event is technically on a Saturday, the cars begin to show up very early, and the towns and businesses up and down Woodward Avenue gear up over the course of the week before. It is "Cruise Week" in the Motor City.
The nine smaller cities that line Woodward Avenue and sponsor the Woodward Dream Cruise offer a variety of fun-filled activities for the family. Live bands, Dream Cruise merchandise, and even a "Kid Zone" are set up at different sites and businesses along the cruising route.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is a 16-mile long car show that is historic and fun for people of all ages. Stretching from Ferndale to Pontiac, it celebrates the nostalgia of the '50s and '60s when Woodward Avenue was the heart and soul of cruising in Detroit. There is no charge to attend the Woodward Dream Cruise, but if you want to set up your beach chair along the side of the road and watch the cars go by, get a parking space early! Even better . . . polish off the hood of your classic or custom car and cruise.
In order to get the most out of the Woodward Cruise, many participants and car fanatics stay overnight in the Detroit area. There are several hotels directly on the route, and several more just minutes away. The Somerset Inn hotel is located about a mile east of Woodward near the middle of the cruise route.
